One of the blogs that I frequently read is "Cali and Jody"... "two social visionaries, workplace activists and agents of global change..." read more about them at: http://caliandjody.com/.
Cali and Jody came up with this concept - ROWE or Results-Only Work Environment. It's a very real and true concept facing employers today. Especially in the P4P and NY Pipeline Region.
Last year, I wrote an entry titled Gen X and Y Factor. Also one on attracting talent from around the globe... Regions and cities around the world are competing to attract and retain talented individuals. In part to take the place of retiring workers but also to start new businesses. Run not for profits. Run for public office. Etc.
Our region has plenty of opportunities... we need to position ourselves to lead in this new worker revolution or mindset. The new mindset and priorities of young professionals is here to stay... so we need to do some things differently - this is our opportunity to pull together as a region. (I know that is much easier said than done!)
One sentence in Cali and Jody's blog - Workforce of the Future - stuck with me... "The decision every business faces today is whether or not you want to lead through this change or play catch up."
I'd like to expand on that idea... business plays one part (a very important part) - I mentioned "employer development" in Gen X and Y Factor, but business doesn't take all the responsibility. The idea needs to be expanded to include community and place. We all must pitch in to help our region lead and not catch up in the global fight for talent.
We need to think differently - not just employers but the community as a whole - we need to think regionally in our approach and we must lead - not catch up.
We are not facing a new or unique problem. This is happening all over the country - see this article referenced in Cali and Jody's blog from Minnesota Public Radio.
That said... what must our region do? My suggestion is to be more proactive. Not reactive.
We must choose to lead now.... And not catch up later.
